APROXIMITY London Exhibition

Coreset artists, Fiona and David, exhibited alongside interdisciplinary artist and researcher Annie Morrad in Holborn London in November 2024. We hope to bring this exhibition to Newark in 2025, so watch this space for more information!

APROXIMITY brings sound, photography, sculpture, digital art, and video together immersing viewers in posthuman visions of landscape and time.

Founded on a belief in the equality of species and a deep understanding of the impact of human activity upon our world, each exhibiting artist manifests new ways of experiencing place and relationships with the non-human.

From ephemeral sculptures to the intimate testimonies of wild birds, artists Annie Morrad, Fiona Carruthers, and David Carruthers draw reverent attention to the overlooked.

Annie Morrad's art practice incorporates music, installation, photography, painting, drawing, performance, video, and sound. She believes that at the dawn of time, there was one language, conducted through timbre, sound, gesture, rhythm, touch, and smell. This language was uttered by all species. Some humans lost their ability to use this language, and it turned into what we know as 'music'. Part of her practice aims to rediscover this language. She produces artwork that considers interaction, interconnection, and encounters with non-human species. Dr Morrad is an internationally exhibited artist and academic.

Fiona Carruthers works across installation, sculpture, performance, and photography to explore sustainability and survival. Her creative ambitions are profoundly affected by her experience of living in the remote coastal region of Lincolnshire. Physical disability and post-traumatic growth, outcomes of having survived local flooding, have furthered her understanding of how inextricably linked we are to nature, technology, and other species. Carruthers exhibits internationally, has an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, and has received awards from Central Saint Martins, University of London, and Arts Council England.

David Carruthers uses photography, moving images, sound, sculpture, installation, and augmented reality. His work examines amplification and deceleration through landscape and environment, reflecting on stillness, movement, sound, and colour. He explores his roots by connecting places, endlessly mixing memories and experiences. Carruthers holds a Bachelor of Fine Art in Sculpture from Sheffield and a Master's in Fine Art Sculpture from Chelsea College of Art. After Chelsea, he was awarded a postgraduate Fellowship at GLOSCAT.

Freya Blackwood is an art historian and curator whose work explores methods that blur boundaries and destabilise oppressive, prescriptive forms of categorisation. She has a BA from the University of Leeds and a master's degree in History of Art and Visual Culture from the University of Oxford.
